Pungent onions and pretty layer cakes are about as far apart as it gets in the food realm, unless you're dining at Shallotte's Purple Onion Cafe. Old-fashioned, glass pastry cabinets lining the Main Street restaurant's foyer are filled with numerous sweet lovelies from which nary an allium scent arises.
