Sherman Alexie and Smoke Signals

Lee Schweninger discusses two or three short stories from The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (1994) by acclaimed author Sherman Alexie, a Couer d’Alene Native American from Spokane, Wash. The course includes a screening of the film Smoke Signals (1998), directed by Chris Eyre (Cheyenne/Arapahoe) and based on those Alexie stories. Smoke Signals is arguably the first feature length fiction film written and directed by American Indians.
