Jerry and Betty Ford, with Presidents and their First Ladies
After deciding he would leave politics in 1977, Gerald Ford found himself the first unelected vice president and president. His presidency may be best remembered as a time of national healing after the Watergate political scandal. On a global scale, he signed the Helsinki Accords, making a move towards détente in the Cold War. During his administration, the U.S. involvement with Vietnam came to a close.
